{HERE are not — and cannot be any other columns like Stay-Locked Columns.
All important processes of their manufacture, as well as the special machines
of our own invention employed in producing them, are fully protected by
patents.

Remove this protection and there is not a column manufacturer in the
country who would not gladly discard their present makeshift mode of con¬
struction and pirate our methods and ideas. The ordinary methods of column building, in
contrast to ours, are amateurish and crude, in fact there is absolutely no room for compari¬
son — Stay-Locked Columns are different in every way — use them once and you never will
be satisfied with any other kind.

Put Stay-Locked Columns on your porch and they will be good as new, years after
your neighbor was compelled to tear out those which he thought were “just as good”.

Double V Joint, Moisture Proof
Staple^traddle the Joints every few inches

Figure 2 is an interior view showing how the staves are locked by the staples. These staples —
see Figure 1 — are made in our own mill of the strongest cold rolled steel and are driven in by special machi¬
nery after the column is glued up, not in the ends only, but throughout the entire column, straddling the
joints every few inches — see figure 2— the peculiar double V joint is moisture proof and the staves are
glued together under enormous hydraulic pressure before the staples are driven in.

Put them where you will, in the hottest room, the driest or dampest climate, they POSITIVELY
LWILL NOT OPEN.

WE GUARANTEE IT

Any column depending on glue alone to hold it together is not a reliable column as the joints
will surely open up ; our columns do not depend on glue, but the sturdy little staples, capable of
resisting enormous tension, hold the joints secure and tight and will not permit them to open.

The good honest material, the thick caps and bases, the staple locked construction which has
no equal, the skilled workmanship, in fact the entire general make-up of our columns place them far in
advance of all others. We make any size or design.

of the interior of one of the immense Corinthian columns made by us for the beautiful Keith
residence, Beaumont, Texas, which is illustrated in this catalogue.

These columns are 26 inches x 21 feet 6 inches and made of 2 inch staves with our
cleated construction and are far more rigid and stronger than if made of 3 inch or 4 inch
staves as constructed by other column makers.

This order was entrusted to us by the contractor, Mr. David Getaz, Knoxville, Tenn.

Our Lock Cleat Corrugated Joint Construction

for very large columns ; approved and highly recommended by the leading architects and builders.

Fig. 1 shows how cleats are placed crosswise witSi the staves.

Fig. 2 shows the corrugated joint which is laid in white lend
and cross nailed every few inches with cement coated nails ; each
clept is glued and nailed with four cement coated nails making it
absolutely impossible for the joints to open.

SOLID LARGE BORED COLUMNS

These columns are made of Michigan white poplar in all
sizes from 6 inches in diameter up to 9 inches by 9 feet.

Sometimes we have in stock a
limited number of bolts that will turn
12 inches.

The heart is entirely removed
by boring a 3 to 6 inch hole accord¬
ing to diameter of shaft ; this effectu¬
ally prevents checking or warping.

These columns are in great de¬
mand for interior as well as exterior
work, as they take enamel or may be
stained to perfectly imitate oak, mahogany or other fancy woods.

Please do not confuse these with other bored columns;
ours are different and always reliable. We do not use fir, cedar,
spruce or any other Western stock.

White poplar is found in but few sections of the state ; it is
an ideal wood for column work and is very lasting. We have
used it nearly seventeen years and know it is trustworthy.

dings, and other functions in private homes; they ulso make
beautiful decorations for churches.

Columns are hollow and may be wired for electric or
piped for gas fixtures.

COLONNADES have taken the place

of the old style grilles and sliding doors and we now maintain a
department especially for this class of work; we are prepared to
furnish interior columns in yellow pine, oak, birch, mahogany, Cir¬
cassian walnut, in fact any kind of wood you specify.

The beautiful effect produced by the colonnade may be ruined
by using ill shaped columns; you should use our columns and be
assured of getting perfect designs, material and workmanship.

We submit these two designs of colonnades merely as a sug¬
gestion.

Interior columns which set on pedestals usually omit the square
bases and unless otherwise specified in your order we will ship
without them.

STUB NEWELS are usually 32 inches over all so that balusters from 16 to 24 inches long or rail with easings (goose
necks) may be used. Newels should be sawed off at the bottom to conform with length of baluster used as the top
of newel should never extend more than 4 inches above top rail. Dotted lines indicate where rails should intersect.

THE CAREFUL BUILDER always paints the inside as well as the outside of the bases with a good, thick coat of
pure lead and oil before placing the columns in position. It is also a good idea to paint the bottom and inside
of column as far as brush will reach.
